Green and White revolution technologies in India have led the country to achieve self-sufficiency in food and dairy products production. But, excessive use of chemicals resulted in chemical residues in food products, degradation of natural resource base, environmental pollution and health hazards. The A1 milk from exogenous animals is unhealthy for human beings. Further, inorganic clothing and personal care items are exhibiting long term ill effects on human health and ecosystem. This led to increased demand for organic products now a days and mushrooming of such companies. In this article, an attempt was made to compile and enlist the information on some of the major organic products and producing companies in India and the need for scientific validation of products produced through organic and natural farming.

  • Introduction

“Organic Agriculture (OA) is a holistic production management system which promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem’s health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity”. An organic productis made from materials produced by organic agriculture. Those edibles which are grown and processed without involvement of any artificial substances are called as organic food products (eg: Organic fruits, vegetables, cereals, millets, dairy products, honey etc.,). These organic foods contain many antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, phosphorous etc., Organic products have less/negligible amount of pesticide residues, toxic metal content (eg. Cadmium) and provides better taste than conventional food products. Consumption of organic foods regularly ensures better health and nourishment. Further, they also act as a good immunity booster for human beings. They also have positive impact on environmental safety. For eg. organic products have better qualities than conventional ones as detailed below few examples in Table 1 and 2.

The dairy products (milk, curd, cheese, butter etc.,) obtained from exogenous cows (Holstein Friesian, Brown siwss, Jersey) are causing ill effects on human health. The milk obtained from exotic cow breeds is called as A1 milk and that from indigenous breeds is called as A2 milk and the differences are detailed below in Table 2.

Organic cotton clothes are environmentally friendly, free from toxic chemicals and cost effective. They have no or very less chemical retention because of which they avoid human allergies and skin cancers, thus, safer for human beings.

Organic skin care products are free from toxic chemicals like parabens. As these organic products derived from plant and other naturally occurring ingredients, they are less likely to cause akin allergies, inflammations and irritations. These work better on skin than synthetics because of its high antioxidant content.

  • Conclusion

With the growing consumer demand for organic products, the organic marketing and manufacturing companies are mushrooming day by day. There are hundreds of organic and natural products available in the market. However, there is a dire need for scientific validation and certification of such products in order to cull out fake products and ensure better human health and standard of living.

  • Future Line of Work

Governments and institutions should lay proper guidelines and standards for organic production, processing and manufacturing in order to sale only qualitative products in the market. There should be proper mechanism for fixing the premium price instead of leaving it to the companies. All the documents have to be thoroughly checked before issuing license to manufacture and market organic and natural products.
